Legal Intern Placement Program

In 1995,  the GWAC Foundation created its signature Legal Internship Placement Program (L.I.P.P) to assist in fostering and sustaining a viable presence of women in the legal profession throughout the Greater Washington D.C. area.  The L.I.P.P. program is designed to sponsor summer internships for minority law students with financial need and offer law students the opportunity to gain invaluable legal experience that they would otherwise be unable to obtain. L.I.P.P. award recipients are awarded a stipend that is distributed during the summer of the internship program, at the start and finish of the internship.

2023 L.I.P.P Recipient

My name is Jamesha Caldwell, and I am a proud GWAC Legal Intern Placement Program 2023 recipient. With immense honor and gratitude, I just completed my legal internship experience with the office of Rep. Jasmine Crockett.

At the end of my first year of law school, I found that my once-bright flame of enthusiasm that fueled my legal aspirations had dulled, leaving me to question my place as a Black woman in the legal field. However, I am happy to say that my internship experience with Rep. Jasmine Crockett’s office reignited my passion, reshaped my purpose, and rejuvenated my commitment to the legal profession.

This summer, I was deeply immersed in the legislative process, where I often found my social concerns aligned seamlessly with the Congresswoman’s priorities, from analyzing bills and regulations that impacted and shaped the lives of constituents to drafting memoranda and bill language surrounding issues related to gun reform, reproductive justice, voting rights, and agriculture. I am delighted that I actively contributed to the policy formulation process. I even had several opportunities to engage with constituents and stakeholders, wherein those conversations often offered profound insights into their needs and concerns, reaffirming the importance of Congressional representation.

Ultimately, this internship revitalized my dreams and affirmed my legal path. It illuminated how legal advocacy molds the future. I emerge from this transformative journey with renewed determination to advocate for justice, amplify voices, and contribute to society’s betterment through the power of law.
